The Whys Behind the Top Cannabis Brands:

INHALABLES DOMINATE:

According to BDSA’s Consumer Insights tracking, ~70% of consumers report consuming via inhalable products and ~55% of cannabis consumers prefer using inhalable products. Those preferences come across in market results as Inhalables, including flower, vape, and other concentrates, accounted for ~84% of total dollar sales across all markets in 2023.

VAPE IS STILL STRONG, PRE-ROLLED PRODUCTS ARE ON THE RISE:

Vape sales accounted for ~25% of total dollars across BDSA-tracked markets in 2023, making vapes the second largest subcategory by dollar sales behind flower. Vapes are the second most preferred inhalable product after flower, with ~25% of cannabis consumers in adult-use and medical states citing vape as their preferred inhalable format. Pre-rolled sales were especially strong in 2023, with the category making up a 12% share of retail sales, up from 10.5% in 2022.

MIDWEST AND EAST COAST SHOW RAPID GROWTH:

Cannabis markets on the west coast have struggled under price compression and illicit competition, but markets in the Midwest and East Coast regions continued to expand in 2023. Maryland in particular performed strongly since the launch of adult-use sales in July 2023. Monthly retail sales in the Maryland market grew 105% with the addition of adult-use, and the market totaled $780MM for the year.

Best-Selling Cannabis Brands:

Stiizy continued to expand in 2023, and held on to the number one brand ranking by dollar sales for 2023. Also the number one brand in CA, NV and AZ, Stiiizy generated $946MM in sales in 2023 across AZ, CA, IL, MI, and NV.

The leading brand of Green Thumb Industries, Rythm continued to hold second-place and was the best-selling brand in MA and IL for 2023. Offering a product portfolio of flower (~56% of brand sales), vape (~36%) and dabbable concentrate products (~7%), Rythm sales reached $364MM in 2022 across MA, MD, IL, OH, PA, NJ, and NV.

Curaleaf subsidiary Select Oil is one of the biggest players in the cannabis vape market, with products available across 17 states. The brand saw $349MM in sales for 2023 across AZ, CA, CO, IL, MA, MD, MI, MO, NJ, NV, NY, OR, OR, and PA.

Offering a product portfolio of vapes, flower, pre-rolled joints, and extracts, Cresco Labs-owned High Supply was the best-selling brand in IL and MA. With sales in AZ, CA, IL, MA, MD, MI, OH, OR, and PA, High Supply totaled $342MM in sales in 2023.

Coming out of the hyper-competitive California market, Jeeter made a name for themselves with their infused pre-roll offerings before moving into the vape space. Jeeter snags the number five spot on our list, with $298MM in 2023 sales across Arizona, California, and Michigan.
