For many of us, cannabis, and cannabis beverages in particular, play a major role in summer or warm weather fun. On this, the midpoint of Summer 2021, BDSA wants to profile five cannabis beverage brands to watch:
Progressive Treatment Solutions: Tonic
A mainstay of the Illinois cannabis market, Progressive Treatment Solutions has offered Tonic THC and CBD beverages in the market since the medical-only era. The brand’s Tonics are dominant (84% share of the Drink subcategory) in the Illinois market, competing against just a handful of beverage brands.
Artet: Artet Cannabis Aperitif
Offering both cannabis-infused cocktail mixers and premixed beverages, Artet provides stylishly packaged lower-dose products to consumers looking to join the “anti-hangover drinking club.” Artet, in the California market since Summer 2019, was the 9th ranked beverage in California year-to-date, with 250% growth in dollar sales over the past year—versus 79% in the broader beverage category.
CommCan launched the first THC-infused soda product available in the Massachusetts adult-use market in February 2020. Its all-natural SIP sodas, made with cane sugar, are 8.4-ounce drinks with 5 mg of THC distillate concentrate. While the brand holds just 2% share of beverage sales at present, it is well-positioned for growth in 2021.
Cann: Social Tonic
Available in California, Illinois, Massachusetts, and Nevada, Cann has seen the strongest performance of any beverage brand in the past year. Further, Cann is rapidly expanding to new markets through a licensing deal with Green Thumb Industries. Cann’s infused beverages are targeted toward social consumers and those looking for a micro-dose beverage, and it seems that there is no shortage in either of those consumer segments and need states. Cann has become the leading cannabis beverage brand in California by a wide margin, with nearly 25% share of beverage sales YTD 2021.
Stillwater: Ripple (CO)
Stillwater is the #2 cannabis beverage brand in Colorado. The company has gummy and other edible products, but their Ripple dissolvable powders have been a hit with Colorado dispensary customers. Ripple is packaged as a 10-pack of either 10 mg THC, 5 mg THC/CBD (1:1), and 20mg CBD/0.5mg THC (10:1).
Finally, no top-five list would be complete without an honorable mention—so we have to give a nod to another cannabis brand from California:
AbsoluteXtracts and Lagunitas: Hifi Hops
Produced in partnership between California legacy brewery Lagunitas and absoluteXtracts, HiFi Hops beverages have been available in California since 2018. Offering three different dosages of IPA-inspired sparkling beverages, HiFi Hops has already helped absoluteXtracts become the #2 beverage brand in California YTD 2021.
