BDSA Brand Insights: Best-Selling Ohio Cannabis Brands

Just eight months after the legalization of adult-use cannabis, Ohio has already launched adult-use sales! Legal sales kicked off on August 6, 2024, with 98 retailers approved to sell cannabis for adult-use. Ohio’s medical market was already well-developed before the launch of adult-use sales, with 162 brands bringing a total of $120 million in Q2 2024.

The addition of adult-use brought a rapid increase in sales, with BDSA Retail Sales Tracking showing that incremental daily sales grew +97% on the first day of adult-use sales. Retail data from the first seven days of sales suggest that Ohio’s market will continue to expand, with sales from August 6 – August 12 totaling +105% more than the total in the last seven days of medical only sales. Adult-use is forecast to bring in $247 million in adult-use sales in 2024, bringing the annual sales total to $692 million, a +44% increase over 2023 annual sales.

Top Five Best-Selling Adult-Use Channel Brands in Ohio: First Week of Adult-Use Sales

1. Certified Cultivators

Certified Cultivators is a homegrown Ohio brand that was a top-performer in the states medical channel, and is already performing strongly in the adult-use channel. Offering a product mix of flower, vapes, edibles and extracts, the brand brought in a total of $1.6 million in adult-use channel sales in the first week of adult-use.

Flower makes up the largest chunk of the brand’s adult-use sales at (45%), followed by vape (31%) and edibles (19%). Menu Analytics data show especially high availability of the brand’s flower and distillate cartridge products. Certified Cultivators flower products are available at 83% of Ohio adult-use retailers, with a daily velocity of $820, while its distillate cartridges are available at 78% of retailers, with a daily velocity of $283.

2. Buckeye Relief

Ohio-based brand Buckeye Relief was the number two best-selling brand in the first week of adult-use sales. Selling a mix of flower, vape, extract, and edible products, Buckeye Relief brought in $855k in the first week of adult-use sales.

Flower brought in the largest share of retail sales for the brand in the first week of adult-use, with a 75% share of sales, followed by vape with a 17% share. Buckeye Relief’s flower products hold especially high availability of 87% in the adult-use channel, with an impressive daily velocity of $849, while their distillate cartridges hold a 54% availability with a daily velocity of $183.

3. Butterfly Effect

The flagship brand of vertically-integrated cultivator and processor GrowOH, Butterfly Effect was the number three best-selling adult-use brand in the first week of Ohio Adult Use sales. With sales across the flower, vape, edibles, extracts, topicals and sublinguals categories, Butterfly Effect sold $854k in adult-use cannabis.

Flower made up 49% of the brand’s adult-use sales, followed by vape with 21%, edibles with 15%, and extracts with 11%. Butterfly Effects flower products hold an availability of 86% in the adult-use channel, with a daily velocity of $508, while their oil cartridge products are available at 80% of retailers, with a daily velocity of $199.

4. Firelands Scientific

Another Ohio-based brand, Firelands Scientific was the number four best-selling brand in the first week of adult-use sales. With a product portfolio of flower, vapes, extracts, edibles, topicals and siblinguals, Firelands Scientific’s adult-use sales totaled $813k in the first week of adult-use.

The brands largest product categories by dollar share were vape (44% of retail sales) and flower (42% of retail sales). Firelands Scientific’s flower products hold an availability of 71% across adult-use retailers, with a daily velocity of $616, while the brands oil cartridges hold an availability of 73%, with a daily velocity of $526.

5. Klutch Cannabis

Homegrown Ohio brand Klutch Cannabis is a perennial powerhouse of the states medical market, consistently landing in the top five best-selling brand list with their diverse product portfolio of flower, concentrates, vapes and edibles. Klutch Cannabis sold a total of $715k in the adult-use channel in the first week of sales.

Flower brought in the largest share of the brands sales (49%) in the first week of adult-use, with vape bringing in the second largest share (36%). BDSA Menu Analytics show that their flower products are available in 63% of retailers with a daily velocity of $649, and their oil cartridge products are available at 68% of retailers with a daily velocity of $432.

Top Five Best-Selling Medical Cannabis Brands in Ohio: Q2 2024

1. Klutch Cannabis

Ohio-based Klutch Cannabis is a perennial powerhouse of the states medical market, consistently landing in the top five best-selling brand list with their diverse product portfolio of flower, concentrates, vapes and edibles. Klutch cannabis totaled $7.96 million in medical channel sales in Q2 2024.

2. Certified Cultivators

Certified Cultivators Ohio medical channel sales totaled $7.7 million in Q2 2024, making the brand our number two best-seller in Q2 2024.

3. Butterfly Effect

The flagship brand of vertically integrated cultivator and processor GrowOH, Butterfly Effect claimed the number three spot on our best-selling brand list. With sales across the flower, vape, edibles, extracts, topicals and sublinguals categories, Butterfly Effect Ohio medical sales totaled $6.6 million in Q2 2024.

4. Firelands Scientific

Another Ohio-based brand, Firelands Scientific was the number four best-selling brand in Q2 2024, with a product portfolio of flower, vapes, extracts, edibles, topicals and siblinguals. Firelands Scientific sold $5.3 million in Ohio’s medical market in Q2 2024.

5. Buckeye Relief

Ohio local brand Buckeye Relief takes our number five spot in the best-selling brand list for Q2 2024. Selling a mix of flower, vape, extract, and edible products, Buckeye Relief sold $4.8 million in Ohio’s medical channel in Q2 2024.

With a diverse brand landscape and engaged consumer base, Ohio is on track to be one of the fastest growing cannabis markets in the coming years. BDSA forecasts Ohio to bring in $692 million in total sales in 2024, a total that is expected to grow to $2.08 billion by 2028, with $1.87 billion of this total coming from adult-use sales.
