Dispensaries have come a long way since Colorado opened its first recreational cannabis shop in January of 2014. Back then, the vast majority of sales were flower, and shop interiors often felt more like pawn shops than retail oases.

Things have changed dramatically.

A wild diversity of professionally branded products now line shelves — everything from chocolate bars to containers of shatter. Lighting is strategic and pleasing. Layouts make sense.

And competition has grown fierce between dispensaries and brands as the retail environment has matured and the industry has expanded.
